Résumé

Canada’s federal government launched the Federal Tourism Growth Strategy in 2019, recognizing untapped potential in the tourism sector and identifying the need to extend tourism beyond the peak season. The COVID-19 pandemic halted tourism in 2020, exposing the sector’s vital role in Canada’s economy and communities. In response, the government provided significant support, including a $500 million Tourism Relief Fund. Post-pandemic, the new strategy, Canada 365: Welcoming the World. Every Day, builds on past efforts and lessons learned, aiming to drive sustainable growth and global competitiveness. By the end of 2022, tourism businesses recovered to 93% of pre-pandemic levels, contributing nearly $38 billion to GDP and supporting 1.9 million jobs. The sector remains a top service export and is projected to double its GDP contribution by 2033. The strategy prioritizes equity, diversity, and inclusion, recognizing tourism’s role in providing employment for marginalized communities and promoting accessibility for all. To support growth, the government will foster investment through programs like the $108 million Tourism Growth Program and ongoing funding for Destination Canada. Infrastructure improvements, including transportation, digital services, and sustainable upgrades to attractions, are key focus areas. The strategy emphasizes the need for better transportation access across Canada, from international air travel to local infrastructure. It also highlights the importance of collaboration with the U.S. considering the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Canada aims to increase tourism’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) contribution by 40% by 2030 and improve its global ranking on the Global Travel and Tourism Development Index from 13th to 7th place. Achieving these ambitious targets will require coordinated efforts across governments, sectors, and communities. The government will track progress through robust, real-time tourism data via the new Tourism Data Collective. Overall, this strategy represents a unique opportunity to rebuild a more inclusive, sustainable, and competitive Canadian visitor economy.
